Scaling and root planing is a careful cleaning of the root surfaces below the gumline. The purpose of this procedure is to remove plaque and calculus from periodontal pockets, as well as smooth out the roots of the teeth to remove bacterial toxins and help the gums reattach. This procedure may take more than one visit to complete and may require a local anesthetic.
